He Is Coming Review – A Brutal, Retro Roguelite That Hooks You Fast

Pros
Addictive roguelite gameplay
Tons of secrets and synergies to discover
Quick, bite-sized runs perfect for short sessions
Cons
Repeated deaths can feel punishing
Steep learning curve in early hours
He Is Coming is a fast-paced roguelite that hits you with a retro visual punch and a constant stream of "just one more run" energy. Developed by Chronocle and published by Hooded Horse, it mixes pixel-art charm with brutal RNG-fueled challenge in a game that’s all about experimentation, survival, and mastering its hidden systems.
You play as a lone knight—armed with little more than a stick—racing against time to loot up and survive until the first mini-boss strikes on the third night. Survive two of these, and you’ll face the final boss on Day 9. That said, most players won’t make it that far without serious trial and error.
Gameplay Overview
Combat in He Is Coming is automatic and turn-based. Speed determines who attacks first, and all your stats (attack, health, armor) come from your gear—there’s no traditional leveling. Instead, success depends on luck, smart item combos, and movement across the map to pick up key equipment.
The current early access build includes two distinct biomes—Forest and Swampland—each with their own unique enemies, items, and synergies. Unlockable items, hidden item sets, and gear fusion mechanics (like combining food with a witch cauldron or gear with a golem) keep things fresh. Inventory space starts tight but expands with progress, forcing players to make meaningful choices about what to keep.
Kingmaker Mode & Replayability
He Is Coming features a unique Kingmaker mode—an asynchronous multiplayer twist where your character becomes a boss in someone else’s game, and vice versa. It adds a layer of community challenge and replayability, with special unlocks tied to this mode as well.
Retro Visuals with a CRT Twist
Visually, the game leans into its pixel-art style, complete with an optional CRT filter that adds nostalgic screen lines for that old-school feel. It’s a small touch, but one that enhances the game's vibe. You can disable it, but honestly—it looks best with it on.
Final Verdict: 4/5 – Can Buy
He Is Coming is a roguelite that demands patience and rewards experimentation. Runs are quick, frustrating, and wildly satisfying when you finally get the right item combo to click. It’s not for the faint of heart—but if you're into smart, fast, and brutally fair indie games, it’s worth your time.
